about
A week or so ago, I was out early walking our dog. It was a foggy morning. The traffic lights at the intersection glowed. It felt a little spooky. I took a photo of this view and posted it to Twitter, saying something about how I was looking forward to the time change so I didn't have to worry about last-minute vampires looking for victims, trying to beat the sunrise. After I sent the tweet, I thought "last-minute vampire" is a good phrase. Then I thought, "that would be a good name for a band." Then I thought, "that would be a good name for a song." A rough version of the chorus popped into my head, and by the time we got back from that walk I had an idea for a song. I wasn't sure if that idea was any good, but I kept working on it until it was.
"Last-Minute Vampire" is a funny little story about a blood sucker who procrastinates. I'm repulsed by the former, but deeply sympathize with the latter. But it's not just about blood lust. It's also about a person (the undead are people, too), looking for a connection. He finds it in the most unlikely place. Don't we all.
Walking through the fog
Racing with the light
He knows he should be home
But it’s technically still night
He’s been picky
Oh so picky
For too long
Now it’s getting sticky
If he can’t find someone he can eat
Before the sun comes up
He’ll be ashes on the street
Cause he’s a last-minute vampire
Last-minute vampire
Last-minute vampire
Our playing the game
Playing chicken with the sunrise
Through his bloodshot eyes
A last-minute vampire’s
Looking for a victim to claim
To a last-minute vampire
You all look the same
He sees dog walkers
So many dog walkers
But he loves dogs
So he’s still stalking
Joggers look good
But they’re too fast
Has he found the right one at last?
There’s a girl hiding in an alleyway
He sneaks up on her
At the dawning of the day
Just as he’s about to nibble
She turns ‘round
He sees
Another set of fangs
And understands
He’s not the only one at last
‘Cause
She’s a last-minute vampire
Last-minute vampire
She’s a last-minute vampire
Out playing the game
They fall in love with each other
No more hunger
Two last minute vampires
Both want the same
Thing as each other
Just to find another
Last-minute vampires (and me)
Last-minute vampires (and me)
Me and last-minute vampires
We’re the same
The same
The same
