I wear my heart out on my sleeve But it’s Always catching on things When I tuck it back inside Beating loud enough to cry Beats so loud that I could die From the corner of my eyes See you Trying to take me by surprise When it works it’s all I need When it don’t I’m losing speed Catching up then take the lead Build a box for me Made of tiny rings Vent it well so I can breathe Might be slippery But all I ask is that you’re Holding onto it for me Holding onto it for me Time moves faster by design I can see the finish line Find a cure for this disease In the box you made for me Did I throw away the key? Still my beating heart Plays the biggest part Written in a minor key Feed me all my lines Tread the soggy pines The final act soliloquy Written just for me I wear my heart out on my sleeve But it’s Always catching on things Lint collected itches me Would you help me keep it clean Will you take my heart and Help me make it free?

They buried me down in a hole Over where the mosses grow I grew up and sprouted leaves Pulled my roots out Spread my seeds I set off along a muddy road Following the river’s flow I turned back toward the setting sun Felt it passing over I buried myself in the sand In a distant arid land Withered waiting for the day Someone else might pass my way When the rain fell on that lonesome place All my leaves they washed away I set off again as flowers bloomed Floating down the river They didn’t know that I would grow Into a tall and healthy ree They told me that it wasn’t so Despite what I could plainly see I took my chance on open seas But still my roots they followed me Dragged me down below the waves Drank the water, saved the day Then I grew too tall to clearly see The earth spread out in front of me Through the clouds that gathered all around A beard of glowing silver My limbs stretched out so far and wide Their weight it made me tremble Until the crack that split my side A crowd of men assembled They cut me down to build a town A settlement in slumber Buried deep below the ground My ancient aching lumber A child was born among my leaves Her cry a rolling thunder My gift would help her rule the seas Tear evil men asunder Tear evil men asunder

Slow down to 95 With my head on fire I can’t find my way Cause I can’t read the signs All the maps are wrong When we drive alone Through the sorry night We stumble our way home Following the light Fading from our sight No one knows what’s so In other people’s lives No need to compare The truth to nothing there I will love you where We are, and Wherever we may go Head spinning 'round again From the news I read Someone’s gone and said They ain’t coming back no more Nail the windows shut Lock the diamonds up And pray they don’t Find an open door In a river overflowing Always tumbling Like a pair of dice that’s loaded Betting on the house to win Following the light Fading from our sight No one knows what’s so In other people’s lives No need to compare The truth to nothing there I will love you where We are, and Wherever we may go Wherever we may go

Another early morning siren drags him out of bed Reach for the phone but Slams his thumb into the wall instead Stares out at the winter rain That’s coming down again Freezing on the path Wonders, will it last? Or is it nearly past? Looks in the mirror but The face he sees is not his own Can't really tell if what's staring back is flesh or bone He hears footsteps inbound The echo of a sound Long since passed away How long will he stay Hiding from the day? I read your story on the news You never got the chance to choose Between your livelihood And the only thing that could Keep you from floating away Into the rain

I've been waiting for the longest time Just to sing this song After standing in the longest line I want to be with you now that you're gone Nighttime talks are not the best for us We just can't relate There are things that we should not discuss When it's getting late Toss and turn until the night rolls on I want to be with you now that you're gone I've been waiting for the longest time Just to sing this song After standing in the longest line I want to be with you now that you're gone It’s a shame that all our Words fall upon the Glowing pit of burning coals So it seems we need the Light of dawn to Rearrange our broken souls I've been waiting for the longest time Just to sing this song After standing in the longest line I want to be with you now that you're gone Now that you’re gone I reach over but no one is there Now that you’re gone Fading footsteps echo on the stairs Now that you’re gone Under blankets hiding in the dark So I’ll stumble through the shadows And I know you'll sing along I want to be with you now that you’re gone I want to be with you now that you’re gone I want to be with you now that you’re gone I want to be with you now that you're gone

Heartwood Wondering if I should Slip into the grey Throw the past away And disappear for good That was before she came To me in a daydream Static in the sound Fallen to the ground A thing misunderstood Hearts beat a sad retreat To valleys far away Wood burns, the forest turns To ashes in a day Still we say Heartwood Deep within where we stood Tangled up inside Nothing can survive Underneath the soot Hearts beat a sad retreat To valleys far away Wood burns, the forest turns To ashes in a day Here we lay Heartwood Leave me for good Send me on my way In pain, we carved our names In wood that was destined To finally burn away Hearts beat a sad retreat To valleys far away Wood burns, the forest turns To ashes in a day Hearts beat a sad retreat To valleys far away Wood burns, the forest turns To ashes in a day

I’m the one who Saw the writing on the sun I’m the one Who stole the thunder from your eyes It’s a shame That the rules are not the game I’d be the one to Take the prize And you’re the reason For the seizures that are Plaguing every minute I’m awake Will you take me by surprise? I’m the one I’m the one who Can’t stop loving you I’m the one who Comes alive You could say It gets stronger every day And the knowing It’s still growing Is a factor in the fact That I’m the one I’m the one We can change I know it doesn’t have to stay The same The past can Be undone Now you know that I’m the one and You’re the one and That makes two of us To say That we sold our Souls for fun I’m the one I’m the one who Won’t stop loving you I’m the one who’ll Stay alive You could say I’m the only one to stay with And it’s understood That we’re no good But it’s too late to say I’m not the one I’m the one I’m the one I’m the one

Summer sun is sinking low Crickets sing along with the radio Til the day is done we bask in Summer sun Kids are rolling in the grass Make a sound somewhere Between a cry and laugh Little legs that run toward the Summer sun And I don’t know which way to turn To face toward the dying rays How I feel my shoulders burn Ransom paid for endless days One plus one is fun in the summer sun Wish that you were here with me Instead of halfway round the world The other half an open sea Wrapped in outstretched arms of the Summer sun It’s been a long and lonely wintertime When the night is dark and cold We’ve been waiting for the summer sun To dip the earth in solid gold Cold night wind undone By sleepy summer sun Still we sing along With this Summer song In the Summer sun In the Summer sun

The truck turned left Ten past eight Heading for The interstate You and me We go straight Just like always Just like yesterday Thrumming tires Rusted brakes Remind us of Our worst mistakes Where are they going? Where are they going? Going Where are they going? Where are they going Going While we stand still? Stare into A distant haze Taking turns Running late Promised you All my days Wouldn’t have it Any other way But Where are they going? Where are they going? Going Where are they going? Where are they going Going While we stand still? Where are they going? Where are they going? Going Going Going Where are we going? Where are we going Going I’ll wait until

When I was an old person When I was an old person When I was an old person I cried Cause I’ve never been a young person Never been a young person Never been a young person Although I’ve tried And sometimes I lie To feel alive For a little while Will they throw the book at me Lock and throw away the key? Even though I know they wouldn’t try Cause I’m not the one who’s feeling pain Getting caught out in the rain Far as I can tell I’m nice and dry But sometimes I stop to wonder As the world is going under Voices loud as thunder cry And say it’s not like When I was a young person When I was a young person When I was a young person I cried Cause I’ll never be an old person Never be an old person Never be an old person Although I’ve tried And sometimes I’d like To feel alive For a little while And cry Just to hear you sigh And I’m doing fine

I was on my feet When you came to me Bringing what you brung Never said a word But I swear I heard Every note you sung You looked at me With something like love Why you needed me Laid it at my feet So I picked it up Threw it overhand Watched you run again Brought it back to me Just out of reach of Something like love Every time I look away you’re Stretched out on the bed Fingers running through your hair Scratches left on my arm Digging into your head Thinking back to when I first saw your face Almost walked away Took a second glance Then with shaking hands I brought you home to stay We pass in the hall at night Turn on the light upstairs Shining down from above With something like love You keep looking to me For something like love
12.
I got the call to say that something was amiss Like it always is Another accident that happened just like this With a stolen kiss I hear you talking but there isn’t much to say In echoes far away From the home we planned to share one day You got a Christmas card from someone else’s friend Hung it on the wall It meant the year and more were coming to an end In a crowded mall The New Year’s come and gone with nothing having changed We sit in silent pain And hope the other one’s to blame And it’s alright for now, but it won’t be for long I take a bow ‘fore I finish this song I don’t know the words but maybe you can sing along And that’s alright for now The space between us grows Fewer highs than lows We argue just so we don’t have to feel The distance swallows then spits us out again Still I hold on to the doubt As I take my hands off of the wheel Run from the shower to pick up a ringing phone Like a broken bone You say our time is up and no one’s in the wrong And I play along Hang up and know you hide behind an ocean wave Where neither one of us is safe From memories that never ever fade And it’s alright for now, but it won’t be for long I take a bow ‘fore I finish this song I don’t know the words but maybe you can sing along And that’s alright for now And it’s alright for now, but it won’t be for long I walk away before I give you this song I don’t have the words so maybe you can sing along And that’s alright for now And that’s alright for now
13.
Woke up at dawn and Stretched a hand across the bed Feeling nothing where you Last laid your head Cause you were sleeping Somewhere else instead So I rolled over and Drifted off again Then I was on a broken boat Alone at sea Splintered fingers crushing Waterlogged debris In the water staring back at me A familiar face that I can finally see I want to meet you in the morning I want to see you with your head on fire More than just a little Meet me somewhere in the middle The middle of desire I can’t seem to find the Words to say that we could Understand each other’s lives It’s all right To feel a million ways To fill the endless days In between the sighs That fade into the night I want to meet you in the morning I want to see you with your head on fire More than just a little Meet me somewhere in the middle The middle of desire

Raindrops falling on the plumber Climbing through the cellar door Water dripping from the brim Falling to the concrete floor Flow into the cracks uncured Waterfalls in miniature Wash away the pain so Long endured Calloused hand reaches out Pulls the strand so he can see Swinging like a pendulum A naked bulb the shadows flee They pool in corners stiff with dirt Stacked in boxes full of hurt Him an ageless chunk of Broken cold debris Lays his tools in ordered lines His silent family The parable of lonely lives Tightened nuts and bolts behind Heft of metal in his palm He climbs the steps and grits his teeth The thrill of expedition gone Throws a wad of paper in The dumpster where he’s always been And hears it echo as it hits the floor Not the only one who’s feeling like A folded napkin in a ring In this parable of lonely lives The wheel of fortune spins Countless others turn Around and around and around Like him
15.
No one feels good all the time Take what you need If it helps, I’ll step aside Stand up and take care of yours And I’ll do mine Words that were not meant in pain Turn into live grenades When tossed away Lessons we learn about shame Are learned again I’m trying to decipher All the things that I should say Like a hacker cracking passwords On the brink of Y2K When nothing’s gonna happen anyway Waking to sounds in the wall Something inside where your eyes Don’t work at all Why hit your stride when it’s Easier to crawl Follow the rising tide Float in-between the great divide To hitch a ride On swallowed pride Now I’m Trying to decide if Everything will cease to be Like a soldier’s slumping shoulders On the brink of World War III And nothing ever meant that much to me Nothing ever meant that much to me No one ever meant that much to me ‘Cept you You mean that much to me
16.
She leaves tomorrow I’m on my knees Counting the hours til I Hand over the keys Snow in the courtyard Leaves underneath Stand at an open window But it’s too dark to see Shadows echo like the rumble Of distant thunder on repeat Thinking back on someone I once was Static in the heat Who’s in the album? He seems parallel to me You, in the too-blue meadow Just out of reach These photos paint a rosy picture In faded tear-stained red and green Thinking back on someone I once was Static in the heat Find me standing at the riverside Up to my knees In the slow moving mud of time The closest thing to peace That I’ll ever find I’ll have to wait to change tomorrow It’s like another world to me Thinking back on someone I once was Static in the heat Static in the heat

Protest songs are fine I guess Finding rhymes to fit distress Feeling angry for the time it takes To sing the chorus Wish there was a fire hose To redistribute power to those Buried under stone foundations Holding up our nation’s bones It’s broken Rotten Deep inside Beneath the festering divide The only way to fix the heart’s To rip it out and start again Every footstep forward sinks We care too much what rich men think And offer them immunity For all their crimes by daylight We argue words while Sticks break bones Protect the strong and die along A line so thin and blue it groans Under a pile of stolen gold We’re broken Rotten Deep within The easy choice will always win The only way to fix the heart’s To rip it out and start again We claim a moral victory And tell the blind that they can see It’s on them and not on me To say which side should win The even ground’s a canyon deep It's so much easier to sleep If you pretend the poor and meek Are here to stay It’s broken Wrapped in masking tape We hold the rope but won’t escape We’re doing fine so Keep the crying down And always know your place Broken Shrug and say it’s Broken There but for the grace Of others in our race We’d beg to grab a hammer Rip it out and Start again

Gwendolyn Rose Did you suppose that Your first day here Would be reflected in a mirror? Who knows You took a breath When she had nothing left And the news traveled ‘round All of old Boston town and Out to the west Your shock of black hair And your shocking stare At all those who love you Gwendolyn Rose Three little girls Sharing a string of pearls As a new sun arose your Ten tiny toes Stepped into the world Your cry laid the stone Of this house and home Shared by all of us who love you Gwendolyn Rose Today’s the day of your mother’s birth Decades before you arrived Enjoy your first morning here on earth And get ready to fly Up to the north Out to the east Look into the rising sun Smile at the sky Laugh at the clouds This has only begun This day was foretold May you enter it boldly No door or window be closed Go where you may Sleep wherever you lay And know we will always love you Gwendolyn Rose And know we will always love you Gwendolyn Rose Gwendolyn Rose

There’s a man with a rope Stretching into the sky He’s attached to a dog balloon Ten stories high Reflected in buildings that Watch it float by The crowd on the ground Comes alive with a cheer Though they’re chilled to the bone It’s the best time of year For earmuffs, confetti, and Fighting back tears I love a parade Think back on all the Mistakes I made, and how None of them matter at all For one day in the Fall Marching bands marching in Octuple file Celebrities huddle in Fresh fuzzy style Waiting for Santa with Pasted on smiles And I love a parade Think back on all of my Debts unpaid But none of it matters at all One day I’ll Fall on my knees Underneath the Christmas tree Feel the needles cover me I love a parade Sit back and look at the Mess I made But none of it matters at all Standing together in festive thrall Holding hands so we don’t fall

It's just a matter of time Before we figure it out And I hope that I won't be the last one blinking At the sun as it runs out of gas As it fizzles and turns into ash But at least we all know that we'll go out singing: Who are we? Where are we? And why do we live in this hazy past? What’s the point of having all these things If they can't survive a nuclear blast? And I wonder what the world sees When the world is waking up? It's like breaking through a brain freeze That your brain is making up. We’ll endure their endless ranting Break down walls with our clever chanting And where will you be standing When the world is waking up? Two steps forward, they dig in their heels But here comes the rising tide Those who can't accept won't know what to expect When all boats float side-by-side Old men die No one cries As we turn their fossils to fuel When they're gone, we'll live on And those without dough will change the rules. And I wonder what the world sees When the world is waking up? It's like breaking through a brain freeze That your brain is making up. We’ll rebuild with careful planning Pave the way for a bumpy landing What will you be planting When the world is waking up? When the world is waking up?

about

Why release two albums' of demos before releasing finished versions of the songs? Look... professional-quality home recording is hard. If I took the time to produce these songs with the loving care they deserve, my first album would be posthumous. So you get this instead.

Most of these demos were recorded right after I finished writing the songs. All but a few were recorded in one take, on my phone, so I wouldn't forget how to play it. As a working musician, I've performed (most of) these songs dozens of times in live shows. I know them well. It's strange to go back to these original demos because I rarely get it just right on the first try. The songs have changed. I sing them a little differently now. Some of the words have changed. You may discover those changes in the lyrics I've included, because I'm not going to go through and check that they match. I find those differences fascinating. I doubt anyone else will notice or care. But hey, that's art.

Is releasing this collection a good idea? Who knows, but it's somehow fitting that I'm putting these out as quickly and with as little care as I put into the original recordings.

Enjoy.
