Bunkers 03:28
Every day it’s all the same Starting to forget my name All the things we’ve done and seen, and What a year this week has been Fear is spreading like a sneeze Carried on a changing breeze The men we ask to save us Pay themselves in stacks of stolen cash It’s like a snow day without snow Everybody’s letting go Pain sets in our bones And leaves us so alone And if it weren’t for all of you Sitting in your bunkers, too Reaching out in moving pictures Writing words and singing songs, then I might give us up for lost It’s too hard to tally up the cost We’re better living day by day And taking care of everyone We know And those we don’t Because we know we’re not alone No excuse for going out To the bars and making out When our foe invisible is Out there feeding off our souls On the news we hear the voice Of someone who was not our choice A broken puppet clutching strings And pulling down the curtain on us all We fall With no one there to hold And if it weren’t for all of you Sitting somewhere else in bunkers too Prob'ly cleaner than the one I’m in But if it’s not who cares Because We’ll live to fight another day Ignore the ones who say It doesn’t matter if we go or stay Because although we sit at home I’m not alone You’re not alone We’re not alone I sing a song that you can hear And if you hear it Then it means You’re not alone You’re not alone We won’t sacrifice the meek To prop up companies Who won’t throw us a bone We’re not alone Although we’re staying home We’re not alone In our bunkers In our bunkers

Good One 04:03
Tonight we lost a good one A singer and a sage A jester in the first degree A poet on the stage Although I never met him I hold his open cage And sing because he taught me how Now it’s all the rage In ‘96 they fell out of a catalog Landed on a boy learning how to play Followed them across the ocean deep Picking up their gems along the way Today we mourn a good one But not the last I fear Though they're gone Their songs live on Beyond this rotten year Frozen rhymes in changing times Always lead me home To the space between the speakers Where I never feel alone Life is the company you keep The waking and the sleep On days like this they bleed together 'Til it’s so hard to see The beginning and the end Better things are Waiting just around the bend Tonight we miss a good one A hero lost the fight We flip the record over Of the soundtrack to a life Good ones Great ones Echo on and on Good ones linger on Great ones echo and we All sing along Good ones linger on Great ones echo and we All sing along To our favorite songs On and on On and on

Leap Year 05:45
This year’s too long By a thousand days or more Can’t send it back now They closed all the stores This decade is defective Who can guess Which of us will make it through And who will need a new address? Smiling faces lying ‘bout The places that they are Gas is dirty cheap but No one’s driving cars I’m running round the house But not getting far Politicians flying blind And we’re the one who’s seeing stars This leap year’s longer than it ought to be Roll it up and stuff it in a bottle and Throw it out to sea Stop saying next year will improve and Asking what we’ve got to lose The answer is more more more Hypocrites get high on A rising body count Hippocrates saving souls Like the sermon on the mount Rusted points of contact Keep the beasts at bay Checking in on friends and strangers Making sure that they’re okay Power shifting Even farther As the rich pretend to barter This new deal Is getting harder To choke down Without water This leap year’s longer than it ought to be Crumple it, shove it up a bottle and Throw it out to sea Stop saying next year will improve And asking what we’ve got to lose When the answer is more more more We beg them for a test That none of us can pass Looking at the world Through panes of shattered glass Men in charge come apart We break their fall Shaking heads instead of hands And dousing both in alcohol We’re looking older than we ought to be Take this year, cram it in a bottle and Throw it out to sea Stop saying next year will improve And asking what we’ve gotta lose When the answer's always more more more And oh I’m tired of keeping score

Hold On 03:13
Hold on Hold on Cause this road We’re traveling on Is long Hang onto the wheel and Take all the time that you can steal Hold on To the ones you love Like the fingers in a glove That you wear When you go out there Where the future is unclear It’s so easy to be sad So be sad We’ll be there Do the things you’ve got to do In here Where you’ve been And will be Until next year’s Come And gone Now it’s dark But hold on And don’t give up On the ones you love Some days they’re all the ones you got It’s so easy to get mad So get mad It’s okay You’re not the only one To be scared Of things You can’t see hanging in the air Hold on Hold on Time’s are tough But time goes on So do we We roll along Don’t let go When hope is gone Don’t let go Just hold on

about

The songs on this EP were all written between mid-March and late-April 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Like everyone else, I spent that time at home—working, helping my kids navigate remote learning, working, playing, working, and generally trying to avoid having to leave the house for any reason.

These songs cover a range of things I've been thinking and feeling. Maybe you've been feeling the same way. Maybe it's just me. If you *have* been experiencing some of the things I've written about, I hope hearing someone else talk about them makes you feel a little bit better.

These recordings are as raw as my nerves right now, which is to say I didn't put a lot of effort into mic placement, multi-tracking, and other techniques used by people who want music to sound good. These were all recorded in one take (the best of many takes) using a USB condenser mic into a phone, while hidden away in my office while children called loudly for me to see the makeover they'd given our cats. If you think maybe these songs should sound better, just pretend the low fidelity was an artistic decision.
